Property website Zoopla.co.uk have discovered that the most desirable home to most Brits is a modest list:
- 3.5 Bedrooms
- 2 Bathroom property
- With a small laid to lawn garden
- Parking for 2 cars
- Within a 1 mile of the nearest town or city centre
Other desirable factors were:
- En-suite bathrooms
- A garage
- Plenty of storage space
- A conservatory
- A manageable garden
- within a 30-minute commute to work
- Local amenities within walking distance (transport connections, local shops, parks, restaurants, and supermarkets)
- Located in the UK
Modern homes were more popular than traditional Victorian ones.
With the current market making it more difficult than ever for first time buyers to take the first step onto the property ladder, it seems Brits in their 20’s also have lower expectations from their ideal home than older age groups. This demographic would like a modern semi-detached house with two and a half bedrooms, two bathrooms, a small grass lawn and a location within a quarter of a mile to the nearest town or city centre and up to an hour’s commute from work. However those in their 40s desire a south facing, modern, detached house, with 3.5 bedrooms, two bathrooms with an en-suite, a garage, and a large floral garden.
Lawrence Hall of Zoopla commented: “Our taste in houses say a lot about us as a nation and it seems Brits are as modest as ever. Forget chocolate-box cottages, swimming pools and sweeping drives – our ideal homes are practical and best suited for our family lives. Clearly proximity to a well-connected train station or motorway is crucial as more of us are now looking to cut down our daily commute. When looking for a property, finding the right balance between a comfortable, spacious home and a convenient commute to work is evidently more of a priority for Brits than finding a mansion in France, or Malibu beach house”.
