Many people try not to think about what would happen if they became sick or could not work. It is assumed that their employer will continue to pay them if they were off work on long-term sick leave, however in reality less than half of employers offer sick pay above the minimum statutory requirement.
Others believe that the State will look after them, without realising the funds available to them are small and it could be that they are not entitled to benefits at all.
It is important to think about planning for the ‘worst case scenarios’ so that you are sufficiently covered. With the funds offered by your employer or the State, you will also need to think of how you would afford your essential monthly costs – mortgage, insurance premiums, monthly bills and school/nursery fees.
